Z pewnym zaskoczeniem przeczytałem na stronach wss.pl informacje o końcu projektu WinFS. Aż mi się nie chciało wierzyć, by flagowy projekt Billa G. został ot tak porzucony, zacząłem więc podażać za linkami.
Na WSS.PL artykuł został zatytuowany: Prace nad WinFS zaniechane. Artykuł, krótki i dosadny w swojej treści:
WinFS, znany pierwotnie jako natywny system plików w Windows Codename Longhorn (obecnie Vista) został anulowany i nie będzie już dalej rozwijany w obecnej postaci. Po wycięciu z systemu operacyjnego miał to być osobny produkt, ewentualnie zaimplementowany w przyszłych edycjach Windows. Teraz okazało się, że WinFS nie ujrzy światła dziennego, chociaż pewne jego elementy być może zostaną włączone do innych rozwiązań. Fakt zaniechania prac jest oczywiście równoznaczny z anulowaniem wydania Bety 2, która miała zostać udostępniona niebawem.
Źródłem tej wiadomości była strona bink.nu. Więc zobaczmy co tam zostało napisane. Tytuł: Microsoft has scrapped plans for a WinFS Beta 2. Instead, elements of WinFS are being rolled into other products. jest już z goła inny niż to co jest na wss.pl. Cytat:

Podążyłem za źródłem na strony www.pro-networks.org. A oto i tytuł naszej wiadomości: Microsoft to WinFS: Drop Dead. Podtytuł: Microsoft has scrapped plans for a WinFS Beta 2. Instead, elements of WinFS are being rolled into other products. Widać, że bink.nu poszedł na łatwiznę i skopiował podtytuł (fakt, że niewiele więcej można tutaj wymyśleć). A jak ma się Windows do WinFS?
Just as Vista pushed forward on many aspects of the search and organize themes of the Longhorn WinFS effort, Windows will continue to adopt work as it’s ready. We will continue working the innovations, and as things mature they will find their way into the right product experiences – Windows and otherwise. Having so much ready for SQL Server and ADO.NET is a big impact on the platform, and more will come.
